The Marsha Jo Marsh Memorial Membership

Applications are closed.

Martha Jo Marsh was a licensed clinical social worker and psychoanalyst in private practice in Oklahoma City from 1977 until her death in January of 2022. She received her Master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1976 and her certificate in psychoanalysis from the Colorado Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Denver, Colorado in 1991.

Martha Jo was both a pioneer and a pillar in our psychoanalytic community. She actively pursued her growing interest in psychoanalysis by applying for and being accepted into the psychoanalytic certificate program at the Colorado Center for Psychoanalytic Studies in Denver, Colorado. For four academic years she flew once a week to Denver to attend classes and to do her training analysis in person. Characteristic of her generosity and deep commitment to professional education she started a group in Oklahoma City in which she would share with the participants what she was learning in her psychoanalytic training. The fee? There was none, it was absolutely free to anyone who wished to participate. A pioneer to be sure. After receiving her certificate in psychoanalysis she applied for and was granted a training analyst position so that she could provide the required training analyses for those candidates in Oklahoma City who followed her lead and applied for the distance learning program for the psychoanalytic certificate from the Colorado Center. She did numerous training analyses for the two classes of candidates that were to follow. And consistent with her dedication to education and training she provided those analyses at a rate reduced from her standard fee.

This marked the beginning of her role as a pillar in our psychoanalytic community. She would continue that role in many ways. She served as a consultant to numerous therapists in the mental health community. She agreed to teach each academic year, again for free, the University of Oklahoma psychiatry residents a course on the history of psychoanalytic theory. And by always being a strong and consistent supporter of the Oklahoma Society for Psychoanalytic Studies she created a legacy for us all. It is fitting therefore that this full membership and seven seminar fees be awarded in her name.
