Description:
This presentation will focus on expanding existing psychodynamic and multicultural understandings of sociocultural dynamics in the therapeutic relationship, which are necessary for providing culturally informed psychotherapy to individuals from all sociocultural backgrounds. Dr. Tummala-Narra will present a culturally informed psychodynamic framework to understanding and responding to sociocultural oppression and trauma, emphasizing the impact of racism on clients and therapists. Racial and cultural therapeutic dynamics will be discussed in the context of the present-day U.S. and global contexts which are rife with social and political polarization. As the presenter has expertise in the areas of immigration and race, there will be a focus on the experience of racial minority immigrants with an exploration of theoretical and clinical case material.
Learning objectives:
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
1: Describe the impact of racism on the intrapsychic and interpersonal life of clients and therapists.
2: Identify how the therapeutic relationship can mirror racial dynamics and inequities in broader society.
3: Identify how psychodynamic concepts can help clients and therapists engage in meaningful, humanizing dialogues amidst the ongoing social and political polarization.
